The Top 10 Most Absurd Time Covers of The Past 40 Years

Reason Magazine, ever delighted to snipe at others, points out a load of silly hype from Time.

If only what was good for the goose was good for the gander: no, wait! Is it possible that Reason Magazine has published something that was ridiculous hype? Could they have published some libertarian point of view that is ludicrously alarmist or otherwise silly in hindsight?

Let's collect a top 10 silly articles from Reason. Pick a back issue at random and look at it for the ridiculous. Extra bonus points for black helicopters!

Good god, Mike Huben. Are you still around?

Why, of course I'm still around.

What's surprising is that libertarians are still around, considering how the popularity of libertarianism has plummeted with the popularity of their right-wing economics. Only the ideological fanatics seem to be left, the LP is a fraction of what it was, and in these hard times even college students are not gullible enough to buy the Horatio Alger stories libertarians tell.

Well, libertarianism has certainly suffered for its piecemeal, unprincipled adoption by many on the right. If losing popularity is what it takes to shed its association with the right wing, then I'll take that. This is a time of shifting political alliances, anyway. If libertarians can be pared down to the radicals, perhaps we can build a better, more consistent movement. After all, I'm of the opinion that libertarianism actually belongs on the left, and I think Obama's authoritarianism is going to draw many non-totalitarian leftists into left libertarian ranks.

Good god, I just clicked on the link to "Reason",and there was Drew Cary leering up at me! Why is it that B-list (and lower) comedians and stage magicians always seem to be associated with Libertarianism? Can't they find a few washed up supermodels to endorse them, at least?

Drew Carey has all the physical and personal attractiveness of Rush Limbaugh, not to mention the drug and sex issues. But I've always liked his comedy.

As a rule of thumb, celebrity endorsements are pitiful no matter who or what.

But folks, come on, let's find something silly at Reason. We're talking fish in a barrel here!

I thought their magazine cover with Bush and the headline "Bush: Exit Stage Left" was pretty clueless when you consider how many on the left who hated everything the man stood for. It's like, "Man, what a crappy president... WITH LEFTIST TENDENCIES!!!!"

The "Death of Private Education" cover from the late seventies got a giggle from me...
